Genre barriers were built so Jutes could smash ‘em. The tattooed Canadian began his career as a rapper. Hazy alt-hop tracks like “Cocaine Cinderella” and “We Good” attracted a legion of fans. Through the years, creative curiosity and a lifelong love of various music styles started to shape his output. He points to his Dad’s Motley Crue recommendation and his own discovery of The Chili Peppers and OutKast as being key to his evolution. “I gradually transitioned into being an actual singer,” he says, revealing that pop punk melodies come out of him “organically.” Hybrid jams like 2020’s “When You’re Around” and “Where Are You Going” feature guitar hooks that would fit well on Taking Back Sunday’s ‘Tell All Your Friends’ – just trade trap hats and 808s for live drums. A follow-up to his ‘Overrated’ EP, “Bad Dream” reaches into Jutes R&B pocket. In this DSCVR at Home performance, he leads the action like someone who has sung from the heart for eons.
