Octave Mandolin vs. Mandolin: What are the differences?

In this video I talk about the differences between the Mandolin and its big brother, the Octave Mandolin.  The Similarities: - They're both tuned the same way (G-D-A-E), except the Octave Mandolin is tuned (you guessed it) an octave lower. - They're both double-stringed. - They sound really well in a folk or classical setting. The Differences: - Given that the Octave Mandolin has a longer scale length, it plays very differently than the Mandolin. It's not ideal for the rhythmic "chopping" sound that works well for Mandolin. - I like playing the Octave Mandolin as almost like a melodic bass instrument where you can do walking bass lines. If you're a mandolinist and ever stumble across an Octave Mandolin I hope you give it a try!
