This is the part that NOBODY notices is there on the original studio recording of Shadow of the Day...in addition to the main rhythm guitar part's repeated 4-chord progression and the lead guitar's repeated high-register part, there's a third guitar playing octaves. The presence of this guitar part is probably part of why Chester plays a C#5 on the live version in most places where the F#5 chords are present on the studio version (the bass also plays a C# note when those F#5 chords are happening, so Chester may have just followed what he thought were the root notes too). The D# octaves also provide a nice major 7th tonality over the top of the E5 chords in a lot of places too.
