What is bass 'growl' and how does Flea get that growly grind?

Basic discussion on 1. amp, 2. bass, and 3. technique to get that growly grind that we love from Flea. Skip forward for some average sound samples. Strings are d'addario 45s (balanced tension) - not fresh. NB: note that when I say action at '3/64ths' I mean measured at 12th fret with bass flat on its back. If you measure from the side (playing position) this jumps to a touch higher due to the lesser weight of the string (5/64ths) - another often overlooked factor in communicating action. They key is low relief for that buzz! UPDATE: Flea's tech (in latest premier guitar video - FEB 2017) himself stated he sets fleas action at about 3/64s and 4/64s at 12th fret. So my directions are about bang on correct
