"The Nearness Of You" - From the film "Romance In The Dark" - Composed By: Hoagy Carmichael and Ned Washington in 1938 and sung in the film by Gloria Swarthout. The first recorded version was by the Chick Bullock Orchestra on April 26, 1940, followed two days later by the Glenn Miller Orchestra on the Bluebird label.
Ned Washington was nominated for eleven Academy Awards from 1940 to 1962. He won the Best Original Music award twice for "When You Wish Upon A Star" in Pinocchio in 1940 and "High Noon (Do Not Forsake Me, Oh My Darlin')" in High Noon in 1952. During his career he wrote the words to hundreds of songs; some of the more notable included "I'm Getting Sentimental Over You", "My Foolish Heart", "Stella by Starlight", "Gunfight at the O K Corral", and "You Stepped out of a Dream."
Howard Hoagland "Hoagy" Carmichael was an American composer, pianist, singer, actor, and bandleader. He is best known for writing "Stardust", "Georgia On My Mind", "The Nearness of You", and "Heart and Soul", four of the most-recorded American songs of all time.
