Kate Ryan (born Katrien Verbeeck in Tessenderlo, Belgium, in 1980) became one of Europe’s biggest dance-pop acts of the 2000s, best known for high-energy Eurodance covers of French-language classics — Mylène Farmer’s Désenchantée, Desireless’s Voyage Voyage, and this, her reworking of France Gall’s Ella, Elle l’a. Released in May 2008 as the third single from her fourth album Free, it became a continental smash: it topped the Spanish download chart for eight consecutive weeks (over 200,000 copies, certified 10× Platinum) and reached #2 in the Netherlands, #2 in Poland, #2 in Sweden, #3 in Hungary, #7 in Belgium and #10 in Germany.
The original Ella, Elle l’a was written and produced by Michel Berger for his wife France Gall, appearing on her 1987 album Babacar. The title translates as “Ella has it,” and the song is a tribute to jazz legend Ella Fitzgerald — as well as a quiet protest against racism and an anthem of self-belief. Berger’s version hit #1 in Austria and Germany and #2 in France, and won two Victoires de la Musique.
For the UK, Kate Ryan’s label Universal struck a deal with All Around The World — the same Blackburn dance label that had broken fellow Belgian act Milk Inc. in Britain — to put out a bilingual “UK version” with English verses and the French chorus intact. It arrived in late May 2009 but did not break into the UK Singles Chart Top 100, remaining first and foremost one of the defining continental Eurodance anthems of the late 2000s. Kate Ryan is still active today, with fresh reworkings of Ella, Elle l’a and Désenchantée appearing as recently as 2026.
