"Ruby, Don't Take Your Love to Town" was written by Mel Tillis and originally recorded by Waylon Jennings in 1966. It was also recorded by Johnny Darrell in 1967, the same year in which I was called up for military service. However, it seriously hit the charts two years later with the top-selling release by Kenny Rogers and the First Edition. Although originally written about a World War II soldier, the timing of its release - together with reference to “crazy Asian war” in the lyrics - meant that it was assumed to be about the Vietnam War. Understandably then, it became something of an anthem among the SVN veterans ... and defines the era - along with movies like Forrest Gump and Good Morning Vietnam.
