Preview: The eternal dilemma with Indian cricket in recent times has been regarding the balance between long-term planning and short-term results. During their ODI World Cup win in 2019 and the T20 title victory in 2022, England showed the benefits of having a vision without compromising on results. It is a template that the Indian team is still far away from cracking as they look to transition towards a phase beyond the Virat Kohlis and Rohit Sharmas.
In that aspect, the ongoing white-ball leg of the West Indies tour hasn't gone to plan for Hardik Pandya's men. They did win the ODI series but were stretched considerably and have now lost two T20Is in a row against West Indies for the first time since 2016. The fact that this has come at a time when the Caribbean side has been at arguably its lowest in terms of morale and squad strength makes the picture a lot worse for the Indian team.
However, like with anything, there are pros and cons. The results haven't come as yet but India have been able to give game time to the likes of Tilak Varma (who has impressed straightaway) and Sanju Samson (who is yet to come to the party) as viable middle-order options. Mukesh Kumar, Ravi Bishnoi and Ishan Kishan are the others who have gotten opportunities to be in the mix. With the T20 World Cup next year scheduled to be in West Indies and USA, this series is more like an audition for a lot of these fringe players to stake their claim for a World Cup spot.
Hardik will definitely be disappointed at the slip-ups from his team during crucial moments in both the games so far. India had the upper-hand to get across the line but weren't able to make the right decisions when they mattered the most. The batting in particular hasn't lived up to expectations and it is a critical area to address as they head into do-or-die territory for the series. The lack of runs from Suryakumar Yadav and Shubman Gill has been a big blow for the visitors and the duo will be keen to get back to run-scoring ways.
The bowling has overperformed to keep India in the race but the batters haven't entirely adapted to the two-paced nature of the surfaces on offer. Hitting through the line isn't a smart option on these decks and some of India's next-gen batters haven't been able to adapt successfully. Credit to West Indies here as their bowlers have bowled with utmost discipline and clarity to stifle the Indian batting line-up. How the young batting unit performs will once again hold the key to the outcome for the final game of the WI leg before the series moves to USA.
