It is a part of Ecuador and is spread over about 60 thousand square km. It is located in the Pacific Ocean, about 1,000 km from the South American continent. The equator passes through it. It is considered one of the leading places in the world for wildlife viewing. Ecuador declared the Galapagos a wildlife sanctuary in 1935 and a national park in 1959. Then, in the year 1978, UNESCO declared it as its first World Heritage Site.
