이시각 오송 침수 피해 현장 현재 비 피해 상황은?
Good evening. Thank you for joining us. I'm Yoon Jung-min.
We start with the aftermath of the rain that battered the country over the weekend.
We go live this evening to one of the places that was hit hard by heavy rainfall.
Reporter Song Yoo-jin is there.
Yoo-jin, what's the latest from where you are at this moment?
Jung-min.
I'm in Osong in Cheongju City, Chungcheongbuk-do Province where there haven't been too many updates in the past few hours.
We're approximately a two-hour drive south of the capital, Seoul.
What you see behind me is the flooded Gungpyeong 2 Underpass where on Saturday morning at least 13 people lost their lives and nine were injured.
The 6-hundred-85 meter tunnel was completely submerged after flood water from a nearby river rushed into it.
Let's first listen to a local resident who drove past the tunnel the moment it started to submerge.
"Just seconds after I drove into the underpass, my car was completely submerged.
When I drove out of the tunnel, it was already beneath the flood water."
Search and rescue efforts have been ongoing since then, with firefighters and soldiers pumping water out of the underpass so they can access it.
Rescue teams were able to enter the tunnel late last night, and as of 2 PM, they've drained out 90-percent of the flood water.
We don't know exactly how many people were initially trapped inside, but rescue workers say they found 17 vehicles inside, finding one more this afternoon.
All 17 have been pulled out from the tunnel.
Out of the 12 people reported missing to the police, one person host not been found.
Authorities say that there could be more people trapped inside than have been reported missing and so a number of deaths could rise.
Yoo-jin what about other regions?
Well the latest data from the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters show that as of 11 AM today, 40 people have died and nine remain missing across South Korea due to the torrential rain.
This is the highest figure recorded in 12 years, and this year's monsoon season is not over yet.
34 people have been injured while over 15-thousand have evacuated their homes for safety.
19 deaths were recorded in the mountainous Gyeongsangbuk-do Province, mostly caused by landslides, 16 in Chungcheongbuk-do Province, four in Chungcheongnam-do Province and one in neighboring Sejong City.
Although heavy rain is not in the forecast until tonight, we're bracing for it in the coming days.
The Korea Meteorological Administration expects around one hundred to two-hundred millimeters of rain to fall on Chungcheong-do, Gyeongsang-do, Jeolla-do provinces, and Jeju Island into Wednesday morning.
Mountainous areas of Jeju will see up to 5-hundred millimeters.
The central region, including Seoul, Incheon City, and northern Gyeonggi-do Province will experience less rainfall, between 10 to 60 millimeters.
That's why the KMA is seeing Thursday and Friday after the rain subsides as the optimal time for rescue and recovery efforts.
That's all I have for now, back to you Jung-min.
All right.
That was Song Yoo-jin reporting live from Osong.
