The term "bug" in the context of computer systems refers to a flaw or error that causes a malfunction or unexpected behavior. The first recorded instance of a computer bug dates back to September 9, 1947, with the Harvard Mark II electromechanical computer. On that day, operators of the Harvard Mark II, which was being used for the U.S. Navy's computation project, discovered a glitch in the system. They traced the issue to a moth that had become trapped between the points of a relay in the machine. The operators removed the moth and taped it to the computer logbook, along with the notation "First actual case of bug being found." While the term "bug" had been used to describe problems in machines before this incident, this particular occurrence at Harvard Mark II is often cited as the origin of the term "computer bug." Since then, the term has become a common metaphor for software or hardware issues in computer systems.
