What name best describes God in Islam? Most people now know that Muslims do not worship a separate deity named Allah, who is somehow different from God. Allah is simply the Arabic equivalent of the word God in English. But what about the other names used in the Quran and prophetic traditions? What are the implications for understanding various cultures and religions if God has many names?
The Quran says, “Say, oh, Prophet, call upon Allah or call upon the Most Compassionate. Whichever you call, He has the most beautiful names. Do not recite your prayers too loudly or silently, but seek a way between.”
After describing the name, The Most Compassionate (Ar-Rahim), Dr. Shabir Ally focuses on God’s multiple names in the Quran. Many of the names are mentioned together at the end of the 59th chapter of the Quran, called Surah al-Hashr, (The Gathering). In this chapter, we find many names of God depicting various attributes of God—He is forgiving, He is merciful, He is the Creator, and so on. In fact, there are ninety-nine such names that have been compiled by Muslim scholars, mostly from the Quran, but also from the Prophetic traditions. This segment focuses on some possible questions that might arise regarding God’s most beautiful names.
