Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine began in 2022, there’s one group that has stayed away from condemning or criticising the war - BRICS. Existing since 2009, the group is a multilateral cooperation format for the largest non-Western powers from different continents—Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. BRICS countries are trying to create a new global economic architecture that creates greater distance for the Global South from the influence of the IMF and the World Bank. The group is also looking to expand with countries like Saudi Arabia, Argentina and many others showing interests. The expansion of the group comes amid major shifts in the geopolitical order. BRICS is seen as an important player in the international system. However, BRICS have come under intense scrutiny because of their response to the Ukraine invasion. Critics have questioned the BRICS members’ principals as individuals and as a collective.
On this week’s Decode, Zakka Jacob asks what relevance does BRICS have in the Ukraine-Russia war? Has this war, much like the Iraq war, has forced countries to pick sides? And can BRICS truly emerge as the voice of the “Global South”?
