In a do-or-die face-off Mumbai Indians will cross swords against Sunrisers Hyderabad in the 69th group-stage fixture of the ongoing Indian Premier League. While SRH have already been eliminated MI must win this game to keep their playoff hopes alive. The high-voltage face-off will be hosted by the iconic Wankhede stadium in Mumbai.
Head to Head record: Mumbai Indians and Sunrisers Hyderabad have clashed on 20 occasions with the former having an upper hand over the latter by an 11-9 margin. On the contrary Sunrisers Hyderabad assembled a formidable squad on paper but the players couldn't live up to the expectations in the IPL 2023. As a result the Orange army had a miserable season this time losing nine of their thirteen group-stage fixtures.
There have been some spectacular individual performances with Bhuvneshwar fifer and Klaasen's century being the most prominent ones. However they have failed to fire as a unit and as a result languish at the bottom of the points table. But despite their poor form what makes SRH dangerous is they have nothing to lose at this stage and will play their heart out to finish the tournament on a high note.
Therefore MI shouldn't take Aiden Markram and co. lightly as they are pretty much capable of forcing an upset. The journey of Mumbai Indians in the IPL 2023 has been nothing short of a roller coaster ride. A team under transition MI began their campaign with a couple of gut-wrenching defeats but made a remarkable comeback against all odds to stay alive in the competition.
The workhorse Piyush Chawla has led their bowling attack to perfection. Furthermore the emergence of Nehal Wadhera and Akash Madhwal has been a massive positive for the five-time champions. They have some glaring loopholes especially the poor form of Rohit Sharma and lack of quality death bowlers. But despite having a relatively inexperienced squad MI haven't given up on playoffs which is commendable.
Mumbai Indians: MI would be fretting over the availability of Tilak one of the more successful batters for them in the season who last played against Punjab Kings on May 3. One between Nehal and Vishnu could make way. Tactics & matchups: Unleashing a left-arm spinner against Suryakumar would be an option for SRH. Since 2019 Suryakumar strikes against left-arm orthodox spin at only 102 and SRH have Abhishek Sharma and Mayank Dagar in their ranks for this matchup.
SunRisers Hyderabad: On the eve of the game coach Lara was all praise for Umran and declared that he is fit. The J&K pacer may get a look-in. Tactics & matchups: Heinrich Klaasen will once again be key against spin in the middle overs. This season he has scored 260 runs against spin at an average of 130 and a strike-rate of 194. His battle with Piyush Chawla who has the most wickets between overs 7-15 will be the one to watch out for.
What to expect: Another true surface on offer. This will be the second afternoon game at the venue this season with the first one going the chasing side's way. Expect the toss-winning captain to bowl first again in line with the trends at this venue.
Pitch Report: This promises an exciting contest between bat and ball. The pitch's assistance for both bowlers and batters will provide an intriguing battle for dominance. The pitch tends to favor batters providing good pace and bounce. It generally assists stroke play allowing the ball to come onto the bat nicely. However there might be some assistance for the pacers with early movement and bounce. The pacers have taken 69% of wickets in the last three years while spinners have picked the remaining 31%.
