It was an indescribable evening for Gujarat Titans. The Rinku Singh carnage in their previous game is best written off as a freak occurrence in an attempt to move on quickly as games come thick and fast. A few days of introspection will have them believe - perhaps rightly so - that they did almost everything right in that game even as they ended up on the wrong side of the result.
In spite of that gut-wrenching defeat, Gujarat are fourth with a positive Net Run Rate, and with a lot of their pieces starting to come together. The loss of Kane Williamson has barely been felt as Sai Sudarshan has filled in expertly at No. 3. Vijay Shankar has impressed in bits, Rashid Khan is among the wickets again and the bowling unit has largely been cohesive. There's cause for optimism to shrug off the previous result and get their title defence back on track.
For Punjab Kings, the feeling might be new. For the first time since the 2021 season, they managed two back-to-back league stage wins to start off their campaign this year. For a perennially inconsistent side, they'd be chuffed with that beginning. They too, however, go into Thursday's fixture on the back of a defeat but will be buoyed by the availability of Kagiso Rabada and Liam Livingstone that should bring them the combination of balance and firepower that they strove to achieve at the auction table this year.
