目連的母親青提夫人，家中甚富，然而吝嗇貪婪，其子卻極有道心且孝順。她屢屢趁兒子外出時，宰殺牲畜，大肆烹嚼，無念子心，更從不修善，死後隨業力剎那間就入了餓鬼道。尊者目連成道後以神通力觀見母親受種種苦。於是以神通力運飯給其母吃，不料剛進嘴便化為火炭。目連無計可施，十分悲哀，又祈求於佛。佛陀教目連於七月十五日建盂蘭盆會，借十方僧眾之力讓母吃飽。目連乃依佛囑，於是有了七月十五設盂蘭供養十方僧眾以超度亡人的佛教典故。目連母親得以吃飽轉入人世，生變為狗。目連又誦了七天七夜的經，使他母親脫離狗身，進入天堂。
Mulian's mother, Mrs. Qingti, is very rich in her family, but she is stingy and greedy, but her son is very moral and filial. She often slaughtered livestock while her son was out, cooked and chewed wantonly, had no thoughts, and never practiced goodness. After the Venerable Mulian became enlightened, he saw his mother suffer all kinds of sufferings with supernatural powers. So he used supernatural powers to transport the rice to his mother, but it turned into burning coals as soon as he put it in his mouth. Mu Lian had nothing to do, was very sad, and prayed to the Buddha. The Buddha taught Mulian to set up the Ullambana Basin on July 15th to feed his mother with the help of monks from all directions. Mulian followed the instructions of the Buddha, so there was a Buddhist allusion that on July 15th, Yu Lan was set up to support the monks of the ten directions to save the dead. Mulian's mother was able to eat enough and was transferred to the human world, reborn as a dog. Mulian recited the scriptures for seven days and seven nights again, so that his mother escaped from the dog body and entered heaven.
