Horrifying fact: Japan has the most number of 痴漢 Chikan (molestation on trains) incidents in the whole world. 痴漢 Chikan: Indecent acts of coming into direct contact with the body or from over the clothes
But it’s No.1 just by the number of “reported cases” (3,212 reported cases in 2017). According to a survey taken in 2010, only 1/10 of the victims report to the police, and only 1/3 of the victims who do report are counted in the number of incidents because of the complicated procedures of filing a criminal. It’s very frightening, but there could be about 100,000 Chikan incidents a year in Japan (more than 250 cases a day).
There are many different theories about why the number is so large in Japan…
1. The over-packed trains
2. The huge pornography industry
3. Sexlessness (45 times a year on average)
4. Stress from long working hours
5. Women can’t speak out
I think the biggest problem is that many politicians and policemen still think that Chikan incidents are not such a big deal and that many people are overreacting to being molested. However, experiencing Chikan could easily leave scars and trauma in people’s hearts, and there must be new laws laid out to end this horrible situation once and for all.
