Dry Eye Disease can be caused by damage to special glands in your eyelids called oil glands, or Meibomian Glands. These glands are located in your upper and lower eyelids and they produce and excrete oil into your tear film to keep your tears healthy. If these glands are clogged, the oil will not function properly and the patient will begin to have dry eye symptoms. Clogging of these glands will cause them to atrophy, and once the damage is done, we cannot “regrow” them. The waterline of our eyes is where the oil is excreted from. Applying eyeliner to that area can cause theses glands to clog, to keep your eyes healthy and help prevent dry eye, avoid “tightening” only apply your eyeliner at the base of your lashes.
