A Broody Hen Season: Part 1 Setting up the brood

Written By English Country Life on Tuesday, Jun 01, 2021 | 12:00 AM

Through this chicken breeding season we're following Cinnamon one of our Orpington broody hens all the way from beginning to brood through incubating, hatching and raising the chicks until they become independent. This week we cover setting up a brood coop, moving a broody hen, storing hatching eggs and giving the eggs to the hen to incubate. We are collaborating with the brilliant podcasters Coffee With the Chicken Ladies on this series and each week we'll be discussing in their podcast Cinnamon's progress and how we care for her and her chicks through all the ups and downs. HOW TO USE THE SERIES Listen to the accompanying Episode 27 of the Coffee With the Chicken Ladies Podcast which discusses each topic in detail and then head back over here to see the visuals. The podcast can be found through this link: smart.bio/coffeewthechickenladies We breed Buff Orpington chickens and have kept them for a number of years.
