13 Crossings on Maui was one of the most unforgettable adventures I’ve ever had. This 2-mile round trip hike crosses a river over a dozen times as it winds its way to two separate sets of waterfalls, each ending in a big, stunning fall. Along the way there were plenty of spots to stop and swim in natural pools, which made the trek feel like a mix of jungle exploration and canyoning.
We split the hike across two days to tackle each fork of waterfalls. The right fork was an incredible climb with fixed ropes leading up to a towering waterfall. Zoey stayed at the bottom with grandma while we went up, and the experience of scaling the rocks, feeling the spray of the waterfalls, and navigating the natural obstacles was exhilarating. On the left fork, the waterfalls climbed even higher, and halfway up we met a solo hiker named Evan, who joined us for the rest of the ascent and the descent.
The combination of river crossings, rope climbs, and swimming along the way made 13 Crossings feel like stepping into a wild, untouched jungle. Every waterfall we reached was a reward, with rushing water, crystal-clear pools, and dramatic cliffs all around. This adventure was one of the coolest and most memorable experiences I’ve had on Maui, and it’s a day I won’t soon forget.
