2021 BMW 4-Series (overview)
BMW's two-door 4-series differentiates itself from the 3-series sedan with a controversial new design and a more elegant roofline. Mechanically, the two cars are almost identical. They are powered by the same two powertrains: either a 255-hp turbo-four or a 382-hp turbocharged inline-six. While passenger space is obviously arranged differently inside the two-door 4-series, occupants are treated to the same basic interior design, layout, and features as in the four-door—and as fans of BMW's latest interior arrangement. The new 4-series takes on other premium two-door models such as the Audi A5, Lexus RC, and Mercedes-Benz C-class. Fans of the fastback 4-series Gran Coupe sedan or the high-performance M4 (both reviewed separately) will be happy to know that those models will continue to be offered.

The same two overachieving engines offered in the 3-series are available in the 4-series. Models designated 430i is powered by a 255-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder. The M440i is powered by a silky-smooth turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six that gains an assist from a 48-volt hybrid system to make 382-hp. The 4-series provides a very sporty driving experience, courtesy of a retuned suspension, a more-aggressive steering calibration, a wider rear track, and a lower center of gravity. We've tested the M440i coupe and came away less impressed with its driving characteristic than its terrific inline-six. Apart from strong brakes that performed well in our 70-to-zero-mph test (149 feet), the Bimmer's rubbery steering and compliant ride didn't deliver the same satisfaction we got from the M340i sedan.

Shoppers may not notice much difference between the cabins of the 4-series and the 3-series unless they're in the back seat. The dashboard layout, interior materials, and primary controls look to be identical to the four-door 3-series', although we noticed that the lower roofline in the 4-series gives it a less spacious feel. Trunk space is less generous here than in the 3-series, especially in the convertible model, which will likely give up some of its cargo room to provide stowage space for its power-folding fabric roof.
2021 Lexus RC (overview)
One look at the 2021 Lexus RC is enough to get your engine revved up for a thrilling twisty two-lane test drive, but from behind the wheel this sporty-looking coupe is anything but. A turbocharged four-cylinder and rear-wheel drive are standard; a V-6 is optional, as is all-wheel drive. Acceleration is adequate, but not class leading, and the RC lacks the sharp handling of several rivals. The upside is that this two-door mimics the refined ride of other Lexus models. There's plenty of space for two adults to cruise in comfort in the front seats, but rear-seat riders will feel the pinch. Several tech features are standard, including an infotainment system with a Wi-Fi hotspot and a host of driver-assistance features.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance
The RC300 is powered by a turbocharged four-cylinder making 241 horsepower and mated exclusively to an eight-speed automatic transmission. Rear-wheel drive is its only setup. We found the automatic to be a good match for the turbo four, but the engine isn't up to the task of pulling the RC around with any alacrity. Lexus offers two versions of its V-6 to address the lack of power. Under the hood of the all-wheel-drive RC300, the V-6 makes 255 horsepower and pairs with a six-speed automatic. The range-topping RC350 gets a 306-hp V-6 that teams up with the eight-speed automatic (RWD only) or the six-speed (AWD only).

The RC's well-made interior is stylish, comfortable, and spacious, but only for front-seat passengers. Its wild exterior styling also comes with an interior drawback: big blind spots. The front seats in our RC350 F Sport test vehicle were supportive, well cushioned, and wrapped in supple leather. All RC models come with dual-zone automatic climate control adjusted by touch-sensitive slider controls that are surprisingly intuitive and easy to use. Cargo space is limited in the RC, so if you're looking to take a long road trip, you'd better pack light.
