ABACUS: SMALL ENOUGH TO JAIL
Prior to the 2008 mortgage crisis Abacus Bank, which serves the Chinese American Community in New York City, engaged in mortgage lending and as many banks did, sold the mortgages to Fannie Mae. As the crisis deepened with the collapse of the real estate market, trillions in value were reported lost. Defaults on mortgages grew exponentially. As a result of the crisis Abacus Bank, the only bank so involved, became embroiled in cryptic litigation only to be found not guilty by the jury.
Join us for the opportunity to hear from document producer, Mark Mitten ’80 and Jill, Vera, and Chanterelle Sung. Abacus: Small Enough to Jail has been nominated for a myriad of awards including the Academy Award for Best Documentary in 2017. It won the Emmy for Outstanding Business and Economic Documentary in 2018. It is now under contract for a full-length production in Hollywood.
This event is presented by the Farmer School of Business in coordination with faculty who teach the BLS 465 capstone, Business, Law, and Ethics.
