Toranomon means Tiger Gate and this was Edo Castles Southern Gate during the Edo period. That changed in 1870 when Japan moves towards the future and the neighborhood modernized. It’s been trying to modernize for a long time. After WWII, the main road was called MacArthur Road towards the US Embassy nearby. These days it’s the headquarters to many major Japanese corporations but there’s a new vibe from the revitalization efforts after the construction of Tokyo’s Tallest building, Toranomon Hills.
