The United States is surpassing 75,000 new coronavirus cases in a single day. In New Jersey state officials reported another 202 new positive test results Friday for a cumulative total of 176,551. That’s with 20 new fatalities and 15,684 probable and confirmed deaths. Numbers remained steady this week, but the rate of transmission is back up to 1.11. It means each new positive case is leading to at least one other.
The virus has wreaked havoc on the state. Friday, Gov. Phil Murphy announced a new office and task force to track how the government spends nearly $2.5 billion in federal coronavirus relief funds. The Disaster Recovery Office will act as the center point of contact and coordination. It will assume similar responsibilities to an office established in the wake of Superstorm Sandy and charged with ensuring the money is being used appropriately and transparently.
