Come with me to forage for Ostrich Ferns, Basswood Leaves, and new tips from Eastern White Pine trees, up in the north woods in the Upper Midwest, near the Minnesota/Wisconsin border. I forage other plants, too. I make a wild salad and a campfire foil dinner. Learn how to identify ostrich ferns and get tips on harvesting and cooking them.

Once you get to know wild edible plants well, they become like old friends. When I was in the neighborhood of Ostrich Ferns after a business trip, it was a perfect time to visit my old friend, the Ostrich Fern. Some of the plants I forage grow in many places. They could be in your garden, yard, or nearby parks. The herbaceous plants I find include the Common Dandelion, Common Blue Violets, Ground-Ivy (which is not an ivy at all). I also found two great trees at a perfect stage for eating in a salad: American Basswood, also called Linden trees, and the Eastern White Pine. Basswood leaves are great for a salad. And the young springtime tips of White Pine branches have a mild flavor with a texture that's a lot like meat.
I put most of my foraged wild harvest into a regular salad from a takeout. The wild greens sure made that garden salad a lot better! I put my dandelion buds and Ostrich Fern fiddlehead in a foil dinner. That made sure my Ostrich Ferns were well cooked. This meal was delicious! I hope you get a chance to try these plants yourself!
