At Saint Louis University, learning communities help shape the student experience and offer a sense of family amidst the larger SLU community. When you're kind of getting used to college, you're getting used to being away from home and being with new people. Dominique: [00:00:17] It's really great because they offer a wide variety of different interests, such as business engineering and in our case, diversity and global citizenship. One of the biggest things that we get to do as a learning community is we participate in community events. Maddy: [00:00:33] So like the group as part of a planned activity, we went to the balloon glow at Forest Park. Dominique: [00:00:39] And then also something that's really unique to the learning community specifically is we actually all have a class together typically devoted towards something of interest to our learning communities. Dr. Bowen: [00:00:50] In addition to having the students or at least half of the students in my course, then through other learning community events, I'm up here on the floor, we do events off campus together, so I actually get to know them a little bit and they get to know me a little bit. Outside of just the student-teacher relationship. Dominique: [00:01:07] There was one really cool event where we got to have breakfast with our faculty members. Dr. Bowen: [00:01:12] Usually what we do is we meet downstairs in the dining hall, have breakfast, and talk about whatever's on people's minds. Maddy: [00:01:17] I would say that SLC are a great opportunity to ease that transition from high school to college. You're with a group that you probably have a lot in common with and you have common interests with, and you get that sense of community that you might not have gotten otherwise. Dominique: [00:01:33] Not only are we living together in a space, but we're also engaged in classes together that contribute towards the discussions that we're having. Maddy: [00:01:42] I love the SLC so much and I can't imagine my first year here without being a part of it.
