Jack found a video that his Mom had recorded on her deathbed. The things he saw and heard in the recording have turned his world upside down.
Jack's Mom passed away very recently. She was the closest friend he had ever had. He loved hanging out with her. He treasured every birthday gift he received from her. Somehow, Mom would always buy him the exact thing he had dreamt about. Jack's grief was devastating. He seemed to see Mom and hear her footsteps wherever he went.
Jack wonders how this invisible link between them came to be. It probably had to do with his father dying very young. He was often on Mom's mind and when Jack grew up, he realized she still loved him. Apparently her love was focused on their son now.
Jack's Grandma passed away about eight years ago. He had no clue why she died so early. He knew no one is immune to old age. But Granny was so vivacious and beautiful, and always on the go. She'd usually visit Jack on weekends to take him to the park or for a carnival ride or to see a movie. Mom disliked her and they'd quarrel every time they met. They wouldn't talk to each other for months. Then, Granny would come to Jack's birthday party and they'd make fragile peace for a while. Rinse and repeat. According to Mom, Granny didn't approve of their marriage and she did everything in her power to ruin it. Apparently Mom wasn't worthy of her son because she came from a poor family. Jack was outraged to learn this, but he remained very close to Gran anyway. He mourned her with all his heart.
Jack also had a paternal aunt, who was very nice and pretty. They loved playing together. Although she was much older than Jack, she behaved just like another kid. One day, Jack and his Aunt decided to play soccer like the adults they were. What a brilliant idea! His Aunt kicked the ball so hard it hit the dish cabinet point-blank. Glass rained down on the floor. They broke the one-of-a-kind cutglass vase that Dad gave Mom for their wedding anniversary years ago. When Mom entered the room, both of them went awfully quiet. She gathered the shards and spent several evenings gluing the vase back. She didn't even scold them because she loved them so much. And then, Jack's Aunt was gone.
Mom's death left Jack completely alone. He had to keep going. As he was packing her belongings for storage, he'd hold every item in his hands trying to remember the last time his dear Mom used it. He picked up the sewing machine hoping to store her make-up and hair pins inside it. He removed the looper and fidgeted with it for a moment. Just as he was going to put it back in, a USB drive fell out of the machine and straight into Jack's hands. That was the drive Mom used to store Dad's photos and scanned letters. But why did she hide it in such a place? What's stored on the drive now?
Jack's mouth went dry with excitement. He turned on his computer and browsed the drive. A video named "To my darling son" caught his attention. He had never seen it before. When Jack opened the video, he saw his Mom speaking with great difficulty.
Many years ago, when Jack's parents just got married, Grandma kept inserting herself into their life. She tried to pit Dad against Mom, telling him to leave her and take little Jack with him. So Mom went to a black magic school in order to try and drive her mother-in-law away once and for all. The school made it a point to never use magic against one's kin because it could kill them. But Grandma did something to cross the line.
Whether the magic took effect or Grandma was tipped off, but she actually stopped visiting Jack and his parents. Tranquility and joy reigned over their home but it didn't last long. Out of the blue, Jack's Dad was gone, followed by his Grandma and then his Aunt. Finally, Mom was down with a terminal disease. This was the result of her disobedience. She wanted to fend Granny off no matter the cost and she got her wish. Mom is crying in remorse. She's begging for everyone's forgiveness. She's also scared for her son as Jack is the last family member left.
The recording was over but Jack was struck motionless. Can you control other people's lives like that? He took the USB drive to a reputable local magician. He listened to Jack's story carefully and watched Mom's farewell video. After performing a 2-hour ritual on Jack, he said the boy shouldn't dwell on it too much. He should just live on and be kind to people.
It took Jack a while to recover from everything he saw and heard. Indeed, Mom's final days were incredibly painful. And she didn't deserve any of that. All she did was a single fatal misstep.
This story taught Jack a lesson: you should never wish anyone harm, no matter what they do. It's so hard to deal with. If you just treat people with kindness, it will save you so much trouble.
