We are proud to announce our latest release straight out of Mullumbimby High, 'Wannabe Myself'.
We had the pleasure of working with a group of students at Mullumbimby High School in term 3 of this year as a part of our Links to Learning Program.
One of the biggest problems students tell us they are facing today is that they feel judged by their friends and by other young people in their environment, and that it can be difficult to just be yourself. Out of the first group discussion the collective decided on the concept of the mask as a theme to explore the ways we hide behind identities or we hide parts of ourselves to fit in.
Over the 10 weeks we worked with the students to reflect on what masks they themselves wear, and how they can take their masks off and spread a message to other young people about this ongoing issue. We looked into what causes judgment, why we judge and why we feel the need to suppress parts of ourselves. In this video clip the studentβs urge their audience to question what masks they are wearing, and why. In the 10 weeks we saw these students transform from being apart of the issue of feeling like they have to wear masks, to letting their guard down and having fun and being free like all young people really want to be.
It was rewarding for the facilitators to witness the progress of the students, and to once again see the power hip hop has in helping youth break down social barriers that affect them every day.
