Update February 2022: I've completely stopped using hashtags because they stopped working for me. Instead, I've started making a Reel every other day or so. Slowly building up and getting way more engagement from non-followers than regular posts and I'm not even putting hashtags on the Reels btw! You should give it a shot!
Update March 2021: The Instagram algorithm has changed a few times in the last year or so but the general idea of this video should still apply.
My thoughts on "Instagram success" have changed too. I care less about it than I did at the time of making this video. I've found a lot more success and support on Youtube in the last 2 years than I ever did with sharing my art on Instagram for the past 7-8 years... So if you're struggling on Insta, consider shifting your focus to a different platform for a while.
And sorry for the terrible audio, my more recent videos sound a bit better :)

A lot of people probably already know about doing this, but I've seen a lot of good artists who don't. It applies to anyone who uses hashtags on Instagram, not just artists.
It should be noted that I'm not a social media expert, this is just a small change I made that improved how my posts show up in Instagram search results (as they are/were in 2019). It doesn't guarantee likes or follows because someone seeing your art doesn't automatically mean they'll like it and want to see more.
