Shawnee National Forest Indian Kitchen Trail Q & A:
1. How rugged in this trail? This trail is moderately difficult with rolling hills, creek crossings and very slick areas. Horseback riders may also be in this area. Please be safe and watch your step. The main trai to the kitchen is severely damaged by horseback riding activities. Expect more mud on this trail than any other trail in the forest especially during rain months.
2. How long is this trail and is it a loop? This is a there and back trail of about 5 miles in length. It can be turned into a loop trail. However, it is advised that once you cross the road from the parking lot, go past the gate and in about 100 feet or so where the Indian Kitchen sign is laying on the ground, take the LEFT trail. This trail isn't as horse damaged as the right trail. Once on the left trail, continue on straight past the fork and it will take you to the horse tie off area of Indian Kitchen.
3. Are there signs or blazes along this trail? On the original trail, there are some older wooden signs present telling you that you are approaching Indian Kitchen. If you take the older trail, when coming to forks, stay left.
4. Any suggestions? Bring plenty of water and a snack. Make sure you spray yourself and your gear for ticks and mosquitoes. Poison ivy and venomous snakes occur in the area. Stay on the trail at all times. Yield for horseback riders while speaking in a calm voice so that they horse knows that you are a human. Always watch your step - people have died in the area from falls.
