Beginners start here www.artofretwist.com YonniRed shows a popular reason that your retwisted locs may not be lasting. There can be several reasons that the retwist doesn't stay twisted at the roots. This video focuses on when the loc is not twisted tight enough in the first. Maybe because you thought the loc could break from twisting tighter or you did twist it tight enough and the clip placement was faulty.
Here's a list of reasons you retwist may not be staying neat for more than a few days:

1. THE LOCS WERE NOT DRIED THOROUGHLY WHILE CLIPPED IN PLACE.
2. THE RETWIST IS NOT TWISTED DOWN TO THE SCALP BEFORE DRYING.
3. THE CLIPS WERE REMOVED before THOROUGHLY DRYING THE HAIR.
4. THE HAIR IS NOT BEING TWISTED WHILE HOLDING THE ROOTS OF THE LOCS.
(many twists locs with their hands in the wrong place on the locs, this can cause the root to appear twisted but will quickly unravel)
5. THE LOCS ARE NOT BEING TWISTED ON THE PROPER ANGLE TO ALLOW GRAVITY TO WORK WITH THE DIRECTION THE HAIR GOES.
(look closely at your next retwist. The roots should be angled toward the direction of the style. This helps the style to last longer. *This is from my own research, don't expect to find anyone else talking about retwist angles unless they trained with me at some point.
6. SCALP PROBLEMS CAN CAUSE SCRATCHING AND OTHER MANIPULATION OF THE HAIR.
