The Carillon-Sortie by Henri Mulet, played by Gerard Brooks on the famous Cavaillé-Coll organ in St. Ouen, Rouen. Henri Mulet's surviving works are only a few in number and pratically solely for organ; however, among them are such masterpieces as the 'Esquisses Byzantines' as well as this carillon. It is striking how, this piece manages to conjure up a full and virtuosic texture despite a relative economy of notes; indeed, the work is easier to play than it first appears. Bells are evoked with the use of fourths and fifths, both in the melody and harmony, as well as later through the offsetting of triplets against semiquavers. All in all, this is an incredibly effective work, perhaps less well-known than it deserves, which provides a spectacular close to any service or concert program.
