To determine is herniated disc serious, a careful examination of the spine is required, looking at the clinical presentation, exam findings, and imaging studies such as xrays and MRIs. Is a mild disc bulge serious? It is when it the disc begins to interfere with or hit the spinal nerves, which can lead to local pain, radiating pain down the leg (sciatica), muscle weakness (atrophy), and immobility. Is a disc bulge a serious problem? When a disc bulges posteriorly (backward) and begins to interfere with the spinal nerves in the lower lumbar spine canal (these nerves are called cauda equina), this is a bulging disc serious because it can lead to a serious condition called cauda equina syndrome.
