• The G9 works exactly the same as the GH5 on the Ronin-S as far as I could tell they work exactly the same, except for one benefit for the G9–the USB charging.
• The assembly and balancing of the gimbal was reasonably easy and intuitive. However, if you’re looking for the instructions and other paperwork, they are hidden in the bottom of the box in this funky little recess that you might have otherwise missed.
• There are 3 USB cables provided in the leather case. For the GH5 there is a USB-C version, and a micro USB for the G9. There’s also a little infrared cable that’s used for cameras that don’t function this way over USB.
• The Ronin-S can handle up to 3.6 kilos or 8 pounds, so any Panasonic mirrorless shouldn’t be a problem, but the carriage is nice and large and can even take the GH5 with a cage on it.
• You definitely want to download the app, which for android users is the Ronin app and not the “Ronin Assistant”. The Assistant will just frustrate you whilst failing to connect, so make sure you get the correct app.
• The record button, which will start and stop recording, also doubles as AF-ON when pressed halfway. This will work in all focusing modes, but if you drop it into manual focus you can use the follow focus wheel, I found the responsiveness to be quite good and was impressed with the precision.
• You can hold the button near the focus wheel to change the direction of the focusing.
• I recommend you update your firmware, which is done through your computer by using the provided USB charging cable, because they’re have been some performance updates released, but mine was working fine for these Panasonic cameras right out of the box.
• The G9 can also be powered by the gimbal over USB, which is pretty great because the Ronin-S has a 2400mAh battery that’s rated for up to 12 hours. So you’ll likely have some juice to spare to donate to your camera if you’re using one that can be charged via USB. The GH5 unfortunately does not support this feature.
• Make sure to set your camera to “Tether” mode in the USB settings, which can be found in the wrench, under USB Mode.
• A cool function you can do with this gimbal is found in the app, under “Create” then “Track”. There you'll have the option to set points for preset movement. It will smoothly move from point A to point B over the duration selected, and start the recording on your camera automatically, then when it gets to the end point it will wait for the designated amount of time then stop the recording.
