Weird New England: Dover Demon
There is a great little ride that I do out of my home, which takes me through some of the smaller towns and tree line backgrounds of Norfolk County, MA. I call this ride, the Dover Devil because in goes very near the locations were a strange little creature as sighted on three separate occasions back in April of 1977.
This creature has become know as the Dover Devil or the Dover Demon.
The first sighting happened at 10:30 pm on the night of April 21st, 1977. A 17-year-old young man named Bill Bartlett saw the strange being atop a rock wall as he and a couple of friends were driving by in his car.
Bartlett described it as having a “watermelon-shaped” head, with thin, spindly arms and legs, large hands and feet, and hairless orange-tinted skin with a rough texture “like wet sandpaper.”

As best I can tell, my little ride goes right by the spot where Bill Bartlett saw the demon, somewhere along this wall.
The second sighting occurred around midnight on April 22nd when 15-year-old John Baxter was walking home from his girlfriend’s house on Miller Hill Road, not far from the first sighting—and yes times were different then.
Baxter first thought the creature was a friend, but realized it was something else. As the being, ran away, Baxter chased after it and eventually caught up with it crouching on a rock.
He would later say the creature he saw reminded him of a monkey, but with a “figure-eight” shaped head. This is his drawing:
The third sighting occurred the next day on April 22nd, 1977 when 15 year of Abby Brabham saw the demon while she was being driven home by her then 18-year-old boyfriend, Will Taintor. Again, I remind you that times were different…
This time the creature was spotted on Springdale Avenue, again not far from the first two sightings. Abby described a similar creature to what Baxter and Bartlett had seen but added that it had bright green eyes rather than the orange described by the boys.
These sightings were taken seriously by the authorities and investigated. Even though nothing was ever found, they concluded that the kids were all telling he truth, they had indeed seen something, but exactly what, will never been know.
Was it an escaped monkey? A demon or an alien? Who knows…but every time I take this ride, I look for the Dover Devil.
