Symposium: Oil, Business & Blubber, July 17, 2018, at the White Heron Theatre. A presentation of the Nantucket Historical Association. Ben Shattuck, writer, storyteller, 2014 NHA Verney Scholar, and painter, tells the story of America's first bank robbery in 1795 when robbers bent pewter spoons into keys to steal $20,000 in gold coins from Nantucket Bank. The story describes daring heist, the conviction and incarceration of the wrong suspect, and the intrigue, deceit, and cover-ups that ensued in identifying the guilty.
