(3 Aug 2018) Mexico's National Autonomous University (UNAM) is accepting a 12-year-old student to its undergraduate degree program in biomedical physics. The university says that Carlos Santamaria Diaz is the youngest student ever admitted in its century-long history. Santamaria Diaz passed the entrance exam and has already done preparatory study at the university's genetics sciences centre in the school of chemistry. At a news conference Friday, Santamaria Diaz said Mexico's education system needs "a new face." "It's not this rigid institution that just fills your brain with stuff," he said. "It should be a place where you go not to learn, but to discover new things in a way you enjoy." When he was 9-years-old he participated in university programs in analytical chemistry, biochemistry and biology. The UNAM says he will be treated like any other student, with no special privileges or benefits.
