Early in the afternoon on May 6, 2018, I heard from a friend that the Grapevine Vintage Railroad's diesel locomotive, GVRX 2199, had broken down and that a locomotive had been provided by Fort Worth & Western (GP38-3 # 2001) for use until 2199 could be fixed. I decided to go see the train returning to Grapevine.
The Grapevine Vintage Railroad runs excursion trains most of the year between the former Cotton Belt depot in Grapevine, TX and the historic stockyards in downtown Fort Worth. GVRR operates on Fort Worth & Western (former SSW) trackage that soon will also be used by TEXRail commuter trains. Fort Worth & Western is a privately owned short line that was started in 1988 and now owns more than 276 miles of track.
I first caught the train at the John McCain Rd. grade crossing in Colleyville, and after that it was an easy chase back to the depot in Grapevine due to slow orders. The train also had to slow to a crawl at several grade crossings to either flag them or to ensure that the gates were operating.
Back in Grapevine, the four car train was left at the platform to unload and the crew took 2001 across the street to the turntable to retrieve the dead GP7. This way, 2199 would be on the right end of the trainset when it was parked in the single-ended storage track. By the time they returned to the depot, everyone had disembarked and the crew took the train away for storage until the next weekend.
