重慶是一座舉世聞名的曆史文化名城，文字記載可追溯到三千年前。巴渝文化發源于此。公元583年，隋文帝楊堅在這裏設置了渝州，重慶之"渝"由此而來，公元1189年，宋光宗趙敦在這裏設置"重慶府"，于是得重慶之名，以志雙重喜慶。
具有三千多年悠久曆史的重慶旅遊資源極爲豐富，既擁有集山、水、林、泉、瀑、峽、洞等爲一體的壯麗自然景色，又擁有熔巴渝文化、民族文化、移民文化、三峽文化、陪都文化、都市文化于一爐的濃郁文化景觀。
自然風光尤以長江三峽聞名于世。全市共有自然、人文景點300余處，其中有世界文化遺産1個（大足石刻），世界自然遺産1個（重慶武隆喀斯特旅遊區），國家5A級景區7個，全國重點文物保護單位13個，國家重點風景名勝區6個，國家森林公園24個，國家地質公園6個，國家級自然保護區4個，全國重點文物保護單位20個。曾獲得國家環保模範城市、國家優秀旅遊城市、國家園林城市稱號。
Chongqing is a world-famous historical and cultural city, which can be traced back to three thousand years ago. Ba Yu culture originated from here. In 583 AD, Yang Jian, Emperor Wen of Sui Dynasty, set up Yu Zhou here, so Chongqing is also called "Yu" for short. In 1189, Zhao Dun, Emperor Guangzong of Song Dynasty, set up "Chongqing mansion", giving the name to this place which means double happiness.
With a long history of over three thousand years, Chongqing has rich tourism resources of not only the magnificent natural scenery of mountain, river, forest, spring, waterfall, gorge and cave, but also a rich cultural mixture of Ba Yu culture, national culture, immigrant culture, Three Gorges culture, wartime capital culture and urban culture.
The natural scenery, especially the Three Gorges of the Yangtze River, is famous around the world. There are more than 300 natural and humane scenic spots in the city, with one World Cultural Heritage site (Dazu stone carving), one World Natural Heritage site (Chongqing Wulong Karst tourist area), seven national 5A scenic spots, thirteen national key cultural relics protection units, six national key scenic spots, twenty-four national Forest Park and six national geoparks, four national level nature reserves, and twenty national key cultural relics protection units. It has been awarded the national environmental protection model city, the national excellent tourist city, and the national garden city.
