How are fossil fuels formed?

 

CBSE class 10 Science - Sources of energy - Petroleum, Coal, Natural Gas are all known as the fossil fuels. Formation of fossil fuels happened millions of years ago. The dead plants and animals got buried into the oceans and rivers, and with the effect of Pressure and Temperature broke down into simpler products and the final product was the fossil fuels. Coal was formed by the remains of the plants whereas the Petroleum was formed by aquatic marine life. Since it takes millions of years in the formation of the fossil fuels hence these are non-renewable sources of energy. Petroleum products are generally used for running the vehicles and the coal is majorly used in the thermal plants to generate electricity.
