Chinese Cemetery GIRI BOLO, Mount Bolo in Tulungagung, East Java, IDN

 

Tulungagung Chinese (Tionghoa) Cemetery, East Java, Indonesia. GIRI BOLO, or popularly known as Mount Bolo, is actually just a small hill located in West Tulungagung (East Java), precisely in the Bolorejo village area, Kauman subdistrict, which borders Gondang subdistrict. But Tulungagung people are used to calling it Mount Bolo. This hill has long been used for burials for people of Chinese descent in Tulungagung and surrounding cities, such as Kediri, Blitar, Trenggalek, Malang, etc. Up there there is also a building for cremation of corpses. In the past, maybe for decades the image of Mount Bolo was not good, because this place was once used for bad things, namely as a gathering place for prostitutes. However, as local people become more aware and have a better understanding of religion, over time things have changed, and they are no longer what they used to be. Moreover, now a large sign has been installed at the top of the hill that says GIRI BOLO, which was created by the district government with the aim of changing the image to a positive one, so that it can be used as a tourist attraction in Tulungagung. GIRI BOLO, atau populer dengan sebutan Gunung BOLO, ini sebenarnya hanyalah bukit kecil yang berada di Tulungagung barat (Jawa Timur), tepatnya di wilayah desa Bolorejo kecamatan Kauman yang berbatasan dengan kecamatan Gondang. Tapi orang Tulungagung sudah terbiasa menyebutnya dengan sebutan Gunung Bolo. Bukit ini sudah sejak lama digunakan untuk pemakaman orang-orang keturunan Tionghoa yang ada di Tulungagung dan kota-kota sekitar, seperti Kediri, Blitar, Trenggalek, Malang dsb. Di atas sana pun ada bangunan untuk kremasi mayat. Dulu, mungkin sudah puluhan tahun image Gunung Bolo ini kurang baik, karena tempat ini dulu pernah digunakan untuk hal-hal yang tidak baik, yaitu sebagai tempat berkumpulnya para PSK. Namun seiring kesadaran masyarakat sekitar, dan pemahaman agamanya lebih baik, lama-lama berubah, tidak seperti dulu lagi.
