(24 Oct 2017) Kenyan security forces on Tuesdsay used gunfire to disperse opposition protesters on the streets of Nairobi.
The protest took place after Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta said the re-run of the presidential election must go ahead as planned on Thursday, despite the chief electoral officer's recent statement that he cannot guarantee that the polls would be credible.
Opposition leader Raila Odinga's group, the National Super Alliance, reiterated its belief that Kenya's electoral commission is not ready "to conduct free, fair and credible elections".
The opposition group said it won't participate in the new vote "because it doesn't serve the country's interest".
Odinga has said his concerns about the transparency of the electoral process have not been adequately addressed and wants his supporters to protest in the days ahead.
Withdrawing his candidacy for the fresh presidential election, Odinga said the election commission has not made changes to avoid the "irregularities and illegalities" cited in the nullified August vote.
Odinga's legal challenge of vote-rigging had led the court to nullify the election that President Kenyatta won with 54 percent of the ballots.
It was the first time a court had overturned the results of a presidential election in Africa.
The court on 1 September ordered a new election within 60 days. It is set for 26 October.
Odinga's withdrawal created confusion in East Africa's largest economy, with observers wondering how the new election might go forward.
