One of the highlights of last week's New Video Frontiers was Arete Research senior analyst Richard Kramer's talk on how digital advertising markets are rigged. Kramer pulled no punches in calling out the investment bankers and venture capitalists who have fueled an adtech bubble, encouraging money to be pumped in to companies with ultimately unprofitable business models. He also took aim at the digital empires of US tech giants Google, Facebook and Amazon, describing them as the "vampire squids" of web data. Kramer outlined how these firms in some cases control ever step of the trading process in a way which would be legally untenable in financial markets.
