Coverack on the Lizard Peninsula in Cornwall was hit with serious flash flooding less than 8 weeks ago on Tuesday 18th July.
Heavy rainfall started at about 3pm and continued for at least four hours. The storm raged for an hour and a half. Roads were blocked and hailstones the size of 50 pence pieces smashing windows.
One local resident explained "I have never seen such big hailstones. The sun was shining and the wind was blowing and it was hailing, all at the same time.
More than 50 properties were affected by the flooding, but no injuries were reported.
A coastguard helicopter was sent from Newquay. Six people were seen on a house roof and two people were rescued from a house by helicopter.
A major incident was declared at about 5.30pm when a massive flood of water came down the main way into Coverack. Emergency and community services responded immediately to rescue and support local residents affected by the extreme weather and flash floods.
The main road into the village was under water and water poured down the hillside through many houses and gardens.
Fast Multi Agency Response
Cornwall Council, Devon and Cornwall Police and the Environment Agency, including Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service all mobilised to help the local residents and businesses.
Part of the road was washed away causing structural damage and sea front had serious water erosion. In parts there was up to 4ft of water cascading down into the village. The flash flood broke up huge slabs of concrete and sent masses of debris into the sea.
An emergency centre was opened in Truro's County Hall on the Tuesday night.
Rapid Recovery in Coverack
The structural engineers were on site the following day and Cornwall Council put together a plan to repair the main road into the village.
Remarkably after a very rapid response Cornwall Council repaired and got the road open again on Monday 24th July, less than a week after the flooding.
Tourists were allowed on the beach and the village was returning back to normal.
This area of the Lizard Peninsula and Cornwall is very popular with tourists and the Coverack is ready to greet visitors with open arms and smiles.

Drone Photography Services were commissioned by Visit Cornwall (tourist Board) Cornwall Council and Cornwall & Isles of Scilly Local Enterprise Partnership in August to use drone photography and drone filming services to produce two videos showing how Coverack had recovered after the flood.
The message from Visit Cornwall is only parts of Coverack village were affected and the rest of Cornwall and parts of Coverack are operating normally and fully open for business.
