T-rex vs K Shine is now a thing of the past - a part of battle rap history. But what is the history of this battle? Today we discuss.
For those of you tuning in the for the first time, my name is Minnesota Luke. I’m obsessed with battle rap history and battle rap statistics.
Today, we talk about T-Rex vs K Shine…. A battle between two ex friends who were once on the same team. We also talk about their respective crews - Dot mob and NWX
Speculation for this battle occurring has been brewing for years now. Here’s a timeline. Let’s begin with Dot Mobb -
- Dott Mob is a rap collective based out of Harlem. It was started by Murda Mook and TRex at the age of 13.
Dot mobb - unlike many groups involved in battle rap - is not a primarily battle rap based group. Several members of Dot Mob don’t even battle.
Who is in Dot Mob? Original members include Murda Mook,Trex, Dutch Brown, Nymesis, and others.
Some time after, K Shine would join the group and become a main member - especially when it came to battle rap. K Shine and TRex knew one another from as far back as K shine being about 9 years old… so the relationship between the
Does Dot Mobb stand for something? In fact, it does - dyin over this shit.
One of Dot Mobs most porominent members - Murda Mook - has largely been inactive in the modern battle rap scene.
Dot Mob would expand to include other members. In early 2011 (May 2011), Dan Barz and Tay Roc would join Dott Mobb - ironically soon after battling K Shine. Roc’s joining Dot Mob was important for several reasons. First, this was before Roc was the star that he is today. A Maryland based battle rapper joining an established New York city based crew was certainly beneficial for him. Conversely, as Roc began to climb and other Dots began to decline this was beneficial to Dot Mob. Lastly, this is extremely important in this story - as the relationship between K Shine and Tay Roc would become a point of contention.
In September 2012, Real Deal and Daylyt joined Dot Mob.
By October 2015, Dot Mob’s roster was made up of the following…. You’ll notice the date, and notice K Shines name - and you will notice that this is about a month before issues between Dot Mob and K Shine began.
Now I would argue that Trex - not Murda Mook - is the most important person in all of Dot Mob. Yes, Mook’s status in battle rap lends credibility to their brand - but it was Rex’s work from the late 2000s onward that pushed Dot Mob ahead and kept the name alive. Furthermore, he was at the forefront of maintaining Dot Mob - being active in battle rap, building relationships, and scouting members, Without Rex, Dot Mob could have been very well forgotten and became defunct among the battle scene. Rex also played an important role post recruitment of battle rappers - acting as a mentor, advisor, and strategtitian to other battle rappers - including… according to Trex - to K Shine.
And the relationship betwen Trex and K Shine was certainly different than the relationship Trex had with other members like Daylyt or Real Deal. Daylyt and Real Deal had only known Rex for a few years - and futhermore didn’t even live in the same place. K Shine, conversely, had known Rex since the age of 8 - and was a long time member of Dot Mob. The two traveled to battle on multiple occasions and often appeared in one another’s corners during battles.
- Starting in April 2013, DNA and Conceited begin talking about the formation of a new battle rap group called NWX. At this time, the members of the supergroup were going to be DNA, Conceited and Charlie Clips. This fell through and never really materialized. Futhermore, Charlie Clips didn’t seem too interested.
- In May 2013, two months after DNA and K Shine battled - it was announced that K Shine was the newest member of NWX. It was also announced that NWX would be making their world premiere at
