June 19th began our annual trip to the south, ultimately for Sarasota. It was a great trip. We visited The Folkston Funnel, Savannah for a little while, the FEC and in this video, the CSX Abbeville Subdivision! It was a great day of eight trains and the following was seen:
First catch of the day was local freight CSX A749. A lone SD40-2 pulled the consist Long Hood Forward and then switched the Grain Elevator just to the south. As 749 finished up switching, Loaded Phosphate train K811 rounded the bend heading south and ultimately to Cicero, IL. He had a nice SD50-2 leader! As 811 was passing, A749 rolled north with only two cars. Then the chase was on for K811...
We ended up in Colbert, GA at the old SCL depot. The shot was perfect for the SB K811 as he rolled by the SCL caboose! K811 then took the siding at Hull and awaited two Northbounds. First was Q194 with two GEzz, and following was Q539 with three GEzz, but the shots with the caboose was nice! After 539 we got dinner before heading back to Howie for Q211 coming north and Q615 coming south. The short 615 took the siding and the fast Q211 sprinted north with a hornshow and a UP in tow! We decided to chase 211 to Elberton, GA. We won and set up for a low light shot. After returning to Athens, we headed back to the hotel for a bit and came back out very late at night for N320. First though was a mystery K train headed south. After he cleared the single track to the south, loaded coal train N320 came NB with two GEVOs on point and one in the middle acting as mid-train DPU!! Awesome way to end an awesome day! And stay tune for the second part of this trip to the south where we begin the drive down to Folkston!!
