Are there obsolete game components, and is it worth the cost to upgrade them? (TABLEscraps #19)

Today's topic submitted by Trevin Taylor: "Yes, meeples are preferable to cubes, but is it worth the costs. Price point keeps many people out of hobby games, especially if they're coming in from the $20 or less mass market. Money cards vs paper money, cubes vs customs, metal vs plastic vs wood, pre painted vs assembly required. Which bling is nice enough that it should be included with the game even if it increases the price? What pieces should only be aftermarket add-ons as the inclusion would make things cost prohibitive? Carcassonne has decided meeples are required for the theme to come thru, but Pandemic is fine with viruses being cubes. Did either of those make a mistake? Where is the line between quality and cost?"
