Rust was originally released onto Steam's Early Access program on 11 December 2013. Similar to other games in the survival genre, the game tasks players to survive in the wilderness by crafting items using the materials they gather or steal. By the end of 2015, Rust had sold over 3 million copies on Steam. Since the launch, it has added animals, hunting and the ability to craft armor and weapons. The game originally had zombies but replaced them with bears and wolves as computer controlled antagonists. As well as an over-powered helicopter for players to band together and take down. Since its release, it has been met with mostly positive reviews. Reviewers praised the concept and gameplay, while noting that its unfinished state showed. As of the end of 2015, it has sold over 3 million copies and has a peak player base of nearly 60,000 players.
