Large adult Northern Cottonmouth (aka "water moccasin")

Written By Matthew Moore on Wednesday, May 17, 2017 | 02:22 PM

Large adult Northern Cottonmouth (approx. 4ft long) showing initial curiosity of unidentified obstruction (i.e. me) in its path followed by subsequent perceived threat avoidance behavior in a southern Georgia swamp stream on 5/17/2017. This snake was known as the Eastern Cottonmouth (Agkistrodon piscivorus piscivorus) for many years. However, due to recent taxonomic changes for this species, this snake is now known as the Northern Cottonmouth (Agkistrodon piscivorus). This snake is also known by many people by its colloquial name "water moccasin".
