The Whitney M. Young, Jr. Awards Gala is one of Charlotte's premiere fundraising events. This annual event honors community champions who have made a commitment to the development of diversity in both workforce and philanthropy. 2017 Whitney M. Young Award recipients included: Rep. Dr. Alma Adams, 12th Congressional District of North Carolina; Michael Elder, President & CEO of Goodwill Industries and Anthony Foxx, 17th United States Secretary of Transportation. Their efforts have made a positive impact and helped create new opportunities for under-served and underemployed individuals. The 2017 Whitney M. Young Jr. Awards Gala commenced on Saturday, May 6, 2017 at the Westin Hotel in Uptown Charlotte.
